3D Design & Printing

Guidelines for 3D Printing

3D printing Area: The maximum size for 3D Printing an object is 25 cm x 25cm x 25 cm

Turnaround Time: This will depend on the order they are received at the Centre and it is according to the size of the object to be printed and the quality of the design as well as the consumables chosen and its availability.

Pick Up: You will be notified by mail.

Design File Format Required: STL for 3D designs.

Printing Materials:

  • PLA – Biodegradable
  • ABS – Durable
  • PETG – More Durable than ABS
  • TPU – Flexible
  • NYLON (Need to change print head) – Strong
  • Twinkling
  • Engineering filament
Print Time: 3D Printing time depends on the following:
  • Size of an object – Larger objects will take more time to 3D Print
  • Infill of materials – an object having a high percentage of infill will be heavy and be stronger but on the other hand, it will take more 3D Printing time and consumables.
  • Quality of print – 3D Printing a material is dependent on the following parameters.
    1. Fine – 0.2 mm (3D Printed objects have rough surfaces but is completed with less 3D Printing time)
    2. High – 0.16 mm (The quality of objects is refined but with more 3D Printing time)
    3. Extra Fine – 0.08 mm (High-quality objects but with a high considerable of 3D Printing time)

The MDPA 3D Printers have the capacity of operating for more than 48 hours. However, power cuts can cause an object being completed to 90 % be wasted as the 3D Print exercise need to start again.

Guidelines for 3D Scanning

3D Printing Area: The approximate size of a human being.

Turnaround Time: This will depend on order received for 3D Printing Services at the Centre and according to the size of the object to be scanned whether it is done at the Centre or any other location identified by the Customer. All scanned objects need some reworks prior to file conversion.

Pick Up: You will be notified by mail.

Design File Format Required: The scanned file is in Stl format

Scanning Time: Scanning will depend on the size of the object to be scanned. Scanning of objects are done during office hours from 09h00 to 16h00.

Guidelines for 3D Laser Cutting / Engraving

Maximum Cut Area: Laser cutting and engraving can be done on a wide range of materials (acrylic, plywood, leather, plastic and others). The maximum laser Cutting and engraving area is 30cm x 20cm and the thickness of the material should be within 7 mm.

Turnaround Time: This will depend on the order they are received at the Centre and it is also according to the size of the object to be laser cut, the quality of the design as well as the materials used.

Pick Up: You will be notified by mail.

Laser Cutting Design Format: Before starting any laser cutting/engraving process, it is important to have the proper design software. When choosing software, it is advisable to choose one that can export SVG file formats as that is the format suitable for laser cutting. If your software doesn’t support this file format, you’ll need to use it combined with another vector (SVG) file-supporting software. Before starting any laser cutting/engraving process, it is important to have the proper design software.

When choosing software, it is advisable to choose one that can export SVG file formats as that is the format suitable for laser cutting. If your software doesn’t support this file format, you’ll need to use it combined with another vector (SVG) file-supporting software.

It is advisable, not mandatory, for designers to opt for the following designing software:

  1. Adobe Illustrator (.ai)
  2. Inkscape
  3. AutoCad
  4. SolidWorks
  5. Sketchup
  6. TurboCad

Laser cutters access files, which are of vector type only. The popular types of vector file formats are .ai, .svg, .eps, .step, and others.

Materials Used:

  • Acrylic Sheets
  • A4 Plywood
Time Limits: Laser cutting/engraving operations should be carried out under strict observation since the equipment utilizes a laser beam, thus the service is offered on week days only from 09:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 15:30.

Guidelines for 3D Designing

Turnaround Time: This will depend on the order they are received at the Centre and according to the size of the object to be designed. Depending on 3D Model to be designed & Workload. Usually 1 week for designing.

Pick Up: You will be notified by mail.

Design: Designs are usually done from scratch and in some cases where client bring their own designs, we only modify them to adapt to our printers (in terms of size)

Design Time: During office hours from 09h00 to 16h00
